Information of Interest

The Beaufort County Detention Center's current facility was opened in 1992 as a direct supervision operation, the second of its kind in the state. Direct supervision means that inside each general population housing unit, there is a correctional officer on duty to supervise inmate behavior and prevent assaults, destruction of county property, and other inappropriate inmate behavior.

  • The principal task of the Detention Center is to hold pre-trial inmates: persons who have NOT been found guilty in a court of law, and who have NOT lost their Constitutional rights. In addition, the center holds inmates who have been sentenced to periods of incarceration by various members of the Judiciary.

The Beaufort County Detention Center follows all federal guidelines in reference to the Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003 (PREA). Our facility practices zero tolerance for any form of sexual harassment and/or sexual assaults. For specifics on this matter, contact the Director of Programs and Services at 843-255-5182.

  • If you are aware of any sexual misconduct in our facility, please report it. You may contact Hopeful Horizons at 843-524-2256, call the South Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault at 1-800-656-4673, or call our Director of Programs and Services at the 843-255-5182.
