Beaufort Memorial Hospital opened May 1, 1944 as the Lowcountry’s first acute care facility. Chartered by the state and governed by a nine-member Board of Trustees appointed by Beaufort County Council, today the not-for-profit system includes its flagship hospital, licensed for 201 beds, 32 physician practices, two MUSC Health-affiliated cancer centers and three Express Care & Occupational Health clinics to serve residents of Beaufort, Jasper and Hampton counties.

Fully accredited by The Joint Commission (TJC) the hospital offers a wide range of diagnostic and surgical procedures for inpatients and outpatients. Its 201 beds include a 18-bed adult inpatient psychiatric unit, a 14-bed inpatient rehabilitation unit, a 12-bed intensive care unit, a birthing center with the area’s first Level II nursery, and much-needed services including a Sickle Cell clinic and palliative care program. The main campus in Beaufort also includes the award-winning and nationally recognized Cochrane Heart Center, Joint Replacement Center and Keyserling Cancer Center, in addition to an outpatient surgery center, employee childcare center and two medical office buildings.

More than 320 board-certified and board-eligible providers comprise the medical staff. Its outpatient physician network includes 32 primary, specialty and immediate care practices serving more than 35,000 patients annually both in-person and through its telemedicine service, BMH Care Anywhere.

In 2020 Beaufort Memorial opened the Okatie Medical Pavilion in southern Beaufort County to better serve the growing population. The 70,000-square-foot facility includes a second full-service cancer center; primary and specialty care; lab, imaging and rehabilitation services; and multiple adult and pediatric sub-specialists from MUSC.

Beaufort Memorial provides a directory of primary and specialty care providers on its website at BeaufortMemorial.org. The hospital has developed secure, online patient portals which allows patients to check-in online, to access key parts of their medical records, request appointments, pay bills, request prescription refills and more.

With 1,900 employees, Beaufort Memorial is one of the largest employers in Beaufort County and has been recognized by the Beaufort Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Beaufort Economic Development Corporation for contributing directly and significantly to the economic security, prosperity, and quality of life of the entire region. The high level of quality care provided by Beaufort Memorial has been recognized by the Leapfrog Group as a Top Hospital for patient safety, the American Heart Association's Elite Stroke Plus designation for stroke care, and the Joint Commission's advanced knee and hip replacement disease-specific designation for its Joint Replacement Center.
