Beaufort Memorial Hospital opened May 1, 1944 as the Lowcountry’s first acute care facility. Chartered by the state and governed by an eight-member Board of Trustees appointed by Beaufort County Council, today the not-for-profit system includes its flagship hospital, licensed for 197 beds, and multiple outpatient practices and clinics serving Beaufort, Jasper and Hampton counties.

Fully accredited by The Joint Commission (TJC) the hospital offers a wide range of diagnostic and surgical procedures for inpatients and outpatients. Its 197 beds include a 14-bed adult inpatient psychiatric unit, a 14-bed inpatient rehabilitation unit, a 12-bed intensive care unit, a birthing center with the region’s only Level II nursery, and much-needed services including a Sickle Cell clinic and palliative care program. The main campus also includes a nationally certified Joint Replacement Center and the MUSC Health-affiliated Keyserling Cancer Center, offering a full range of cancer services to area residents.

More than 230 board-certified providers comprise the medical staff. Its outpatient physician network includes 18 primary, specialty and immediate care practices serving more than 35,000 patients annually both in-person and through its telemedicine service, BMH Care Anywhere.

In 2020 Beaufort Memorial opened the Okatie Medical Pavilion in southern Beaufort County to better serve the growing population. The 70,000-square-foot facility includes a second full-service cancer center; primary and specialty care; lab, imaging and rehabilitation services; and, multiple adult and pediatric sub-specialists from MUSC.

Beaufort Memorial offers a free doctor referral service at (843) 522-5585 or on the BMH website at: www.bmhsc.org. The hospital has developed secure, online patient portals which allows patients to access key parts of their medical records, request appointments, pay bills, request prescription refills and more.
