Next Transportation Advisory Committee meeting will be held Wednesday, March 11, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.,
at Hilton Head Island Town Hall, 1 Town Center Court

The community-led Transportation Advisory Committee met Wednesday, March 4, and continued discussing and prioritizing a list of transportation-related projects for consideration in the November referendum.

Beaufort County Transportation Committee Chair Kraig Gordon gave a brief presentation of various projects within their purview so the overlap of road needs and requests is minimized. The focus of the County Transportation Committee is primarily resurfacing funding funded through vehicle registration tag renewals. Jared Fralix, Assistant County Administrator-Infrastructure also mentioned that public County-owned dirt roads are on a paving schedule--about 2-3 roads per year--funded primarily through vehicle registration fees.

Bluffton Town Manager Stephen Steese gave a presentation sharing some statistics and infrastructure projects. According to Mr. Steese, Bluffton is the 15th largest municipality in the state, it's the fifth largest in land size, and since 2000, Bluffton has experienced a 1400% population increase. Currently Bluffton has 40,000 residents. To accommodate this increase, the town has had to develop local initiatives and development projects including housing, roadways and commercial space.

Members of the Transportation Advisory Committee will continue to go back to their districts to listen to residents' concerns and suggestions of traffic-related issues then compile as comprehensive a list as possible with special attention being paid to cost and project scope and size--which will then be submitted to County Council for referendum consideration.

The next meeting will be Wednesday, March 11, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., at Hilton Head Island Town Hall, 1 Town Center Court (map). The public is invited to attend.

Meetings will be held at locations around the County so they will be convenient for everyone to be able to attend at least one. The deadline for the committee to submit a final recommendation of projects to County Council for consideration is Monday, May 11. The meeting schedule voted on by the TAC can be found here.
