This year's National Theme:
Life is a puzzle, and we can solve it drug free

Nexus Care of Beaufort County is once again recognizing Red Ribbon Campaign Week with this year's theme of "Life is a puzzle, and we can solve it drug free."

The Red Ribbon Campaign is the largest drug prevention campaign in the United States and takes place yearly Thursday, October 23 through Friday, October 31. It honors the life of Drug Enforcement Administration Agent Enrique "KiKi" Camarena by educating youth on refusal skills, anti-bullying campaigns and encouraging participation in drug free activities.

Since its beginning in 1985, the Red Ribbon has touched the lives of millions of people around the world. In response to the murder of DEA Agent Enrique Camarena, angered parents and youth in communities across the country began wearing red ribbons as a symbol of their commitment to raise awareness of the killing and destruction caused by drugs in America. In 1988, NFP sponsored the first National Red Ribbon Celebration. Today, the red ribbon serves as a catalyst to mobilize communities to educate youth and encourage participation in drug prevention activities.

Nexus Care of Beaufort County wants to shine a light on the national campaign this year by unifying Beaufort County in prevention efforts. The national theme, “Life is a puzzle, and we can solve it drug free” will be incorporated across the County by implementing spirit weeks and challenges for everyone to participate in.

This partnership between Nexus Care of Beaufort County, Beaufort County Library System and Beaufort County Parks and Recreation locations will encourage youth and families to stay healthy and build relationships. Red Ribbon prevention activities unite youth, families, educators, and community members to celebrate healthy, drug-free living by promoting positive alternatives—like sports, the arts, and service projects—that build resilience and strengthen community bonds.

Beaufort County Councilman Larry McElynn (District 10) says, “The foundation you build your life upon becomes the place you go when you are seeking safety, direction, insight, and strength….do not let drugs become the foundation you build your life on.”
