Beaufort County and Stantec Consulting Services, Inc. (Stantec) are continuing to prepare for the historic resource survey of unincorporated Beaufort County on St. Helena Island and south of the Broad River.

With survey fieldwork planned to begin this Summer, we are currently gathering community information and developing a history of the survey area to determine the location of important historic resources built between 1950 and 1979. Community participation in this effort is key.

The deadline to fill out the project questionnaire is Wednesday, April 24. Click on this link to fill out the questionnaire:  http://tinyurl.com/BCHistoricPlaces.

The public is encouraged to share the questionnaire with other community members.

After gathering public information, Stantec Consulting Services, Inc., will complete a draft history of the survey area, focused on the post-World War II era through 1979, and underrepresented communities. Between July and August, survey fieldwork will be conducted and will consist of taking photographs, noting architectural features, and mapping each property, all from the public right-of-way.

Want to learn more about this exciting project? Stantec presented an overview of the project at the March 21 Historic Preservation Review Board meeting. You can watch the recording on-demand here: www.beaufortcounty.tv.

This survey project is funded jointly by Beaufort County and a Federal Historic Preservation Grant through SC Department of Archives and History.
