Windmill Harbor Signal

Friday, September 8, 2023 2:44 PM

Beaufort County and the Town of Hilton Head have worked with SCDOT to approve the installation of a new traffic signal at Windmill Harbor. This project is anticipated to provide immediate safety improvements on US 278 at Jenkins Island, separate from the overall US 278 Corridor project.

Beaufort County’s contractor, W. M. Roebuck, is currently in the process of installing the new temporary wood pole traffic signal at the entrance to Windmill Harbour at the intersection of US 278 & C. Heinrichs Circle/ Crosstree Drive. Construction is anticipated to be completed in 3 weeks with the majority of the traffic impacts occurring in the overnight hours.

At the time of the US 278 Corridor project, the traffic signal will be improved with mast arms that match the other signals throughout Hilton Head Island.  Additionally, the new signal will be equipped with the same adaptive hardware and software that the Town recently installed on the other signals throughout the island.

Motorists are cautioned to remain alert for traffic warning signs, equipment, and personnel.
