Beaufort County Stormwater Department recently initiated a study to proactively identify existing areas of flooding as well potential future areas of flooding on St. Helena Island. Future areas of flooding were based off projected sea level rise conditions, as well as future land use conditions. The goals of the study were to find existing and future flooding areas, and then analyze flood reduction measures the County could take to alleviate issues.

The study was performed by the Stormwater Department’s on call consultant, Woolpert, Inc. The study was conducted over the past several months by a team of engineers and experts in the field of drainage management and drainage issues and focused on the island's existing drainage infrastructure, identified areas of concern, and proposed solutions to address these issues.

Council Member York Glover is eager to share the results of the study with the community and gather feedback from residents. "The drainage study of St. Helena Island is an important step in addressing the long-standing drainage issues that affect our community," said Glover. "I look forward to sharing the findings of the study and hearing from residents about their thoughts and concerns."

Beaufort County Council Member York Glover (District 3) will host a community meeting on Tuesday, April 11, at 5:30 p.m. to present the results of the recently completed drainage study of St. Helena Island.

The meeting will be held at the Beaufort County Library St. Helena Branch, 6355 Jonathan Francis Drive (map).

Guest speaker will be Consultant Crystal Mueller with Woolpert, Inc.

The community meeting is open to all St. Helena Island residents, business owners, and stakeholders. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback on the proposed solutions. The meeting will also be an opportunity for residents to learn about next steps in the process.
