National Weather Service Charleston has issued a severe weather alert for today, April 23.

Between 4 and 6 p.m., a line of thunderstorms is expected to move through Beaufort County, bringing with it the potential for heavy rain, wind gusts of up to 60 mph and hail up to 2 inches, according to forecasters at NWS Charleston.

Recent rainfall has left the ground soft, which raises the potential for downed power lines and trees.

Residents are urged to take caution.

Beaufort County Emergency Management Division is encouraging residents to secure loose items in the yard and to identify a safe room in their home in the case of a tornado warning.

For updates, follow trusted sources, including NWS Charleston and local meteorologists.
