Free Federal and State Income Tax Return Preparation for Qualifying Taxpayers Until April 15

The IRS, in collaboration with the Beaufort County Human Services Alliance, United Way of the Lowcountry, Inc., and other partners, will again provide free basic income tax return preparation and electronic filing for qualified taxpayers. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help to persons generally earning $54,000 annually or less, differently-abled persons, persons 60 and older, and limited English-speaking persons.  The Lowcountry Area VITA Coalition and its IRS-certified volunteers will be offering services through April 15 as follows:
 
  • Beaufort Branch Library, 311 Scott Street, Beaufort (map)
    Mondays 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Thursdays 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (now open)
     
  • St. Helena Branch Library, 6355 Jonathan Francis Sr. Road, St. Helena (map)
    Tuesdays 12:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. (now open)
     
  • The Deep Well Project, 80 Capital Drive, Hilton Head Island (map)
    Thursdays 6:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. (opens January 30)

  • Hilton Head Branch Library, 11 Beach City Road, Hilton Head Island (map)
    Saturdays 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. (opens February 1)
     
  • Lobeco Branch Library, 1862 Trask Parkway, Seabrook (map)
    Saturdays 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. (opens February 1)

  • Bluffton Branch Library, 120 Palmetto Way, Bluffton (map)
    Mondays 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (opens February 3)
 
Tax documents can also be dropped off for preparation coordination on Thursdays from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Technical College of the Lowcountry, 921 Ribaut Road, Bldg. 14, Beaufort (map).
 
Each taxpayer must bring photo identification and a Social Security card. For a full list of acceptable identification and required documents click here.  The VITA program is always seeking volunteers, especially Tax Preparers and Greeters. The IRS provides necessary training and one-on-one mentoring for volunteers. The time commitment ranges from 3 to 20 hours per week.
